About the Project

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) needed a long-term marketing partner to support a wide range of projects aimed at promoting global sustainability. We partnered with them to provide integrated expertise in branding and web development across 6 projects (and counting!).

The Sustainable Development Goals

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) developed by the United Nations Development Programme are a north star of the UNDP’s work towards economic, social, and climate equity around the world. To be truly transformational, it’s vital that they be represented and understood as interdependent.

A Global Identity

The UNDP was on a mission to unify its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a more cohesive, integrated visual identity. Created with a global audience in mind, the basis of the new visual identity is a simple, but strong hexagonal shape. Used individually or as a branching, infinite pattern, the versatile design captures the natural connection between the SDGs. It’s now being used in print and digital collateral across 177 countries and territories to promote the UNDP’s holistic approach to a prosperous future.

“We’ve rolled out the visual identity to a number of UN agencies and partners — a real testament to the quality of Terra’s work.”

Don’t Choose Extinction

“Don’t Choose Extinction” is one of the boldest climate change awareness campaigns of modern times. Admittedly, though, the campaign’s star, Frankie the Dinosaur, was largely unfamiliar with modern digital marketing strategy at the outset of the project. To prepare him for an explosive global debut, we developed a hyper-responsive digital stage for the campaign. On the backend of the site is a CMS tactfully designed to host a large suite of collateral and press kits without slowing page performance, which would limit accessibility to low-bandwidth users in developing nations.

Sharing a Sustainable Promise

Digital storytelling has helped the UNDP exponentially increase reach, but moving people to action is another challenge — especially when asking them to engage with challenging topics. Our report on sustainable consumption uses nuanced UX/UI elements to infuse optimism into topics like depleting natural resources, making it easier for individuals to digest the urgent need for sustainable choices. To encourage motivation and hopefulness, we maximized the report’s impact with an interactive and shareable sustainable choices list that posts directly to social media platforms.

Storytelling That Moves

The average person scrolls the length of the Statue of Liberty every day. So when we were asked to design this special report, we decided to try something that wouldn’t just stop the scroll, but disrupt it entirely. The end result was a fully-horizontal interactive digital story that illustrated what sustainable development and climate action look like for a world recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Halftime for the SDGs

2023 marks the halfway point for the 15-year Sustainable Development Goals project timeline. Unfortunately, a special report released by the UN Secretary-General has revealed that major global conflicts, the pandemic, and diminishing project momentum have eradicated progress towards crucial SDGs. Based on the data available, only 15% of Global Goals are on track to be achieved by the 2030 deadline. Understanding the urgency of this new information, we created a digital report to drive a new level of critical awareness to the SDGs and reveal how we can still meet our 2030 timeline.
